War College: Why Defender?

"Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles"
Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 1

On the Facebook group, in response to my last blog post, Wm Bryon Duncan asked "Why would you ever take less than the allowed max Frames? The math has never worked out for me for taking less frames. Have I missed something?"

Looking at my data on the games my group has played, the Defender has only won 7 games out of 45.  Of those games the Defender has had the least amount of Frames four times and been tied for least amount three times.  So that means the Defender wins 16% of the time and 57% of that time they have had the least amount of Frames on the table.

I don't have blog posts for all of those games but here are links to those that I do have.

The game I really want to look at is Sand & Trees because the Defender choice is interesting to me.  The game size was "Battle" and I played the absolute minimum amount of Frames possible.  I started in first place, dropped to third, then to fifth, and then rebounded to second to finish the game.  If I had targeted and destroyed Occam's Spork's Green zombie Frame in the third turn I possibly could have finished the game in first place.

I guess this is a really longwinded way of saying, yes, there is a reason to take the least amount of Frames.  I'd really love to see data from other groups and see how it has worked out for them.

Player Count

One thing that has sort of annoyed me since the publication of MFZ is the chart listing the number of Frames per player.  It doesn't flow right when I look at it and it bugs the crap out of me.  I'm sure there's a good reason behind it but it doesn't seem right to me.  So I decided to take a crack at changing it.  Here's a couple of alternatives along with the original for comparison.

Thoughts?

War College: Walking Target

Since Blogger is kind of broken at the moment when it comes to pictures, I'm going to take a moment to talk about some things that don't get discussed as much.  We spend a lot of time talking about how people actually build Frames -- way too much, sometimes* -- and what loadouts they should have but, we don't spend much time talking about how to play the actual game.

Something that was mentioned on the Discord server the other day was the idea of a "Walking Target" or  "Honey Trap", a  Frame that draws a heavy response from your opponent(s).  It does this because it looks big or vicious, or because it has a loadout that is perceived as dangerous (Double Direct/Double Artillery).

How you place this Frame on the battlefield during the Set Up phase is important.

If you're playing Defender, placing it on one side of your perimeter to draw your opponent(s) attention so you can move in the other direction is key.  Otherwise you're going to get boxed in and have nowhere to move.  Drawing your opponent(s) attention to one side of the battlefield and not the other is like the misdirection techniques of a good magician.

If you are playing Primary Attacker, having it away from your forces to draw attention and make an opening so you can drive towards the Defender's Stations is paramount.  Once again, misdirection is the key.

If you are playing Attacker, I wouldn't field a unit like this.  Being sandwiched between the Defender and Primary Attacker you don't want attention from either player.  You want both of them to look past you and at the other.  Fielding something that draws attention is contraindicated.

* I'm constantly guilty of this myself, so I'm not throwing stones at anyone here.

Build Journal: Minifig Heads & Helmets

One thing I've noticed lately is that I occasionally like to use minifig heads and helmets to give a frame a bit of personality.  Using them allows you to introduce small scale rounded lines into a build when in general Lego is all about the straight line.

This first started with the Cylon.

The next one along was

Following on from that
is the Stick Figure.

The next production model after
that was the Samurai Mk.2.

The technique went into hibernation after that until the Taurus and Hellstrom
Generics. These are two of my favorite iterations of this technique.

Zizy's Books

It's been a while since I've talked about Zizy's work.  Apparently he has a webstore where you can buy digital versions of some of his books.  All of the text looks to be in Japanese and there are other minor issues with purchasing them but, this is a way for people to finally get their hands on these publications.  So to speak.

Build Journal: Yeti

In my first Quadcast Build Journal I mentioned I was mulling over an idea for the new Ninjago Bar Block.  This is that idea finally taken form.

Version 1 was banged together out of
parts on hand and proved that it was
worth moving forwards with the idea.

Version 2 started using more of the parts
I had in mind in their proper colors.

Version 3 shows the head taking shape and the start of Sentai Marking*.

Final Version.

Flickr page.

*Sentai Marking is the process of using specific colors to differentiate units on the battlefield.
